Coach University Program Components

HealthTeamWorks has been implementing quality improvement (QI) programs and training QI coaches for more than six years. We have packaged our  expertise into a practical, hands-on training program that prepares graduates to facilitate practice transformation immediately. Coach University is one of our most requested offerings.

Held quarterly, Coach University starts with a “Boot Camp." This intensive, week-long training session takes place in Colorado, where HealthTeamWorks' coaches have developed strong relationships with primary care practices developing into patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs). In addition to didactic sessions in the classroom, our expert coaches bring Coach University attendees into the practices to observe coaching techniques first-hand. Students accompany several coaches to experience diverse approaches and solutions to in-practice situations.

Following Boot Camp, coach trainees receive ongoing mentoring by telephone. A mentor coach also visits each novice's organization to observe the trainee in her/his home setting.

Participants in Coach University may return to Colorado to attend a Learning Collaborative, which brings members of transforming practices together to share and learn. Trainees benefit enormously from witnessing practices well-established on the PCMH journey. New coaches learn how to facilitate and plan such an event for their practices. They also attend sessions that prepare them to handle various practice situations, describe ways to overcome roadblocks in the movement toward PCMH and learn techniques to build medical neighborhoods.
